The main interest of Dr. Gabriel Rabinovich group is toward unveiling the role of carbohydrate-protein interactions in immunoregulation, autoimmunity and tumor-immune escape. Dr. Gabriel Rabinovich was born in Córdoba Argentina in January 11th, 1969. Currently Dr. Rabinovich is an Independent Researcher from CONICET (National Council Research in Argentina), Associate Professor at the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (University of Buenos Aires) and Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland (Baltimore, USA). He is also Director of several Courses on Cellular and Molecular Immunology in Argentina and mentor of the Postgraduate Course on Molecular Immunology of the University of Buenos Aires. Gabriel Rabinovich received his first degree in Biochemistry at the National University of Cordoba in 1993 with honours and a Ph.D. in Immunology at the National University of Cordoba in 1999. He was a research fellow from the British Council and Antorchas Foundation at the Gene Therapy Laboratory, Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (Imperial College London) and a visiting scientist at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel). He is now Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland (Baltimore). Dr. Rabinovich is currently Associate Editor of the journal "Emerging Infectious Diseases” from CDC Atlanta, guest editor from “Cytokines and Growth Factor Reviews” and member of the Editorial Boards of “Cell Death and Differentiation”(Nature Publishing Group, UK), "European Journal of Inflammation (Rome, Italy)"and the journal Inmunologia (Spain). He also acts as reviewer for many different international journals and grant agencies. At present, he published 65 original papers and reviews in international peer-reviewed journals, such as Cancer Cell, Nature Reviews of Cancer, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Journal of Immunology, European Journal of Immunology, Trends in Immunology, Infection and Immunity, Glycobiology, Gastroenterology, Cell Death and Differentiation, Biology of Reproduction, Journal of Leukocyte Biology, Investigative Ophthalmology Visual Science, etc. His work has been also patented in Argentina and the United Kingdom. He has been recently invited to write a review for Annual Reviews of Immunology. His work was distinguished by several awards including “The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Award” (New York), “The Cancer Immunology Award” (Cancer Research Institute, New York) the, "Bunge Born Award" to the Young Talent Scientist in Argentina (2005), "The Bernardo Houssay Prize for the Young Talent Scientist of the Year" (2004) given by Argentina government, "The Ten Young Persons of the Year in Argentina TOYP 2004" , "The Young Talent Scientist in Life Sciences from Latin America" given by the Brazilian Society of Biochemistry and Amersham Pharmacia" (1998), the "Journal of Biochemistry Award" for the best paper of the year (1998), the "Cesar Milstein" Award for the Best work in Molecular Biology and Immunology (2003), the "Cherny" Award for the Best multidisciplinary work for his work on galectin-1 and tumor immune escape (2000) and received during four years the "Leonardo Satz Award" for the best work in Immunology (1998, 2000, 2001, 2004). His work about galectin-1 and arthritis has been highlighted in News & Views (Nature) and his work on galectin-1 and tumor-immune escape has been highlighted by Nature and selected by the editorial board of Cell Press as the cover issue of Cancer Cell. Gabriel Rabinovich is the author and Editor of the book "Molecular Immunopathology: Novel frontiers in Medicine; a link between biomedical research and clinical practice" published by "Editorial Médica Panamericana". This book contains 60 chapters dealing with the molecular bases and immunological mechanisms of health and disease (tumor immunology, autoimmunity, transplantation, infection, reproductive immunology). He was also invited to write several book chapters and reviews on topics of Cancer Immunology and Glycobiology to different books and journals. In the past years, he received several national and international grants and awards such as “The Cancer Immunology Award Program”, "The Wellcome Trust International UK", "The Mizutani Foundation, Japan", "Antorchas Early Career Grant", "Grants from the Science and Technology Agency in Argentina", " Sales Foundation in Argentina", "Antorchas Foundation/ British Council" and grants from the "Ministry of Health (Carrillo-Oñativia)" and the "University of Buenos Aires" in Argentina. He supervised three MSc thesis in Biology and a Ph.D. thesis student and is currently supervising other five Ph.D.students and postdoctoral fellows at the Universities of Buenos Aires. He also co-supervises other four Ph.D. students from the National University of Cordoba, University of Buenos Aires and the University of Rosario, Argentina. He collaborates with many scientists in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, United States, Chile, Germany, Japan, Italy, Belgium, Israel and the United Kingdom.
